Conference realignment mania

The SEC wants Texas A&M, Texas and Oklahoma, but doesn't see the latter two as a realistic possibility. Maybe that's because Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe is making a pitch to Texas.

Nebraska has joined the Big 10.

Missouri is trying hard to save the Big 12.

I've got two questions:

What started all this?

Why don't all the commissioners just sit down for a massive realignment meeting?

My understanding is that Mizzou started this mess by saying it wanted to keep its options open. (We know what that means in human relationships, don't we?) To the Tigers' chagrin, the Big 10 just wasn't interested.

Grady at CougCenter (yes, Washington State) has posted a "chat" that explains it all!
