Los Angeles – The WNBA named Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike the Rookie of the Month for games played in May.
Ogwumike led all rookies in scoring (13.8 ppg), field goal percentage (.595) and blocks (1.4 bpg), and ranked second in rebounds (5.8 rpg) and minutes (24.6 mpg). Overall, Ogwumike placed second for total number of blocks (7) and fifth in field goal percentage in the league. She scored a career-high 22 points on 9-for-15 shooting, to go with seven rebounds and three assists in a win over Phoenix on May 26. Ogwumike also had a career-best nine rebounds to go with 20 points on May 24 in a loss to the defending champion Minnesota Lynx.
The first overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft presented by Boost Mobile, Ogwumike made a strong professional debut following an exceptional career at the University of Stanford. In five games, Ogwumike scored in double digits three times, helping the 4-1 Sparks to the second-best record in the West.
Highlights of Ogwumike’s month included:
• May 24 vs. Minnesota: Career-high nine rebounds and 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting in a 92-84 loss
• May 26 vs. Phoenix: Career-highs in points (22), minutes (35) and assists (3) in a 99-88 win
• May 29 vs. Tulsa: Career-high three blocks along with 14 points and 7 rebounds in a 76-75 win
