Games, a record, and ponderings

OOO, upsets:

Virginia stunned #12 Maryland, 60-57.

Louisville beat #17 West Virginia - a team that seems in a slump lately.

#25 St. John's took out #16 Georgetown, 75-71 in OT.

Arizona beat Arizona State for the first time since 2005.

It's fun having so much uncertainty this year. No one is guaranteed a thing - not even UConn.

In other news:

Congrats to Jantel Lavender, who surpassed Katie Smith's scoring record in Ohio State's win over Minnesota today. Lavender put up 29 today, giving her 2,587 career points.

Tennessee had to rally to beat Vanderbilt, and then security for VU tried to hustle the Vols off the court after the game. Sore losers.

Virginia Tech is struggling.

Stopping to contemplate the current Pac-10 standings, there are surprises this year:

Stanford
UCLA
USC
Arizona State
Cal
Washington State
Washington
Arizona
Oregon
Oregon State

Which brings up some questions:

1. Cal tied for fifth?
2. Washington State tied for fifth?
3. Why are Arizona and Oregon each having such a tough time this year?
4. Why is there such a steep drop between Stanford and UCLA and the rest of the conference?
5. Will Tia Jackson stay for the final year of her contract next year after all?
6. How did Nikki Caldwell do it?
7. How does Tara VanDerveer keep doing it?
8. Will Oregon State win anymore conference games?

Both shocking. Cal is young though, but have lost some games they are expected to win. WSU is up and coming.. Mary Murphy thinks June should be COY.

3. Why are Arizona and Oregon each having such a tough time this year?
Both really underachieving. Not sure what happened to Oregon. UoA has been up and down, but I was glad they beat ASU..

4. Why is there such a steep drop between Stanford and UCLA and the rest of the conference?
Consistency. Even on bad days, they keep their focus. Ugly wins are still wins.

5. Will Tia Jackson stay for the final year of her contract next year after all?
Will they let her? Love Tia, but she has tanked in the head coach position.

6. How did Nikki Caldwell do it?
I dunno but I hope one day you are asking #7 about her.

7. How does Tara VanDerveer keep doing it?
Good school, academically and athletically. UConn of the West.

8. Will Oregon State win anymore conference games?
I hope so. I am just happy they were able to field a team. They will get better.

:)

1/2: Mary Murphy needs to calm down....fifth place from tenth does not a COY make.

4: Agreed.

5. Agreed.

6. Me too!

7. True about the school, but I meant coaching-wise.

8. I hope so too. They've got a bright future ahead of them with Scott Rueck.

You're such a June hater...

Have you seen what she's working with? She might just be the coach of the year! To sweep that Cal squad starting Katie Madison, whoa...very deserving of props!

My question to you is, why is she working with less when she's been there for four years and has had time to recruit?

I don't hate June. I think she's a very nice person. I just doubt her coaching abilities.

If she keeps WSU in the top five for a few more seasons, I will change my mind about her.
