Mater Dei 71, Whitney Young 58

I've been hoovering on the SoCal hoops board for the last 20 minutes, when the Mater Dei-Whitney Young matchup at the Nike Extravaganza would have been over. Three minutes ago someone posted that Mater Dei prevailed, 71-58. No surprises there, but too bad it wasn't a close game.

Story with video.

This was Young's first loss of the season. They're now 22-1.

Too bad neither the Young or Mater Dei coaches feel the need to post stats for their players on maxpreps. That's my biggest pet peeve with high school coaches. Not putting up your player's stats is unconscionable.

Tomorrow, Young travels to Long Beach Poly for a 6:30 showdown.

Box score was
Whitney Young -16-8-16-18 =58
Mater Dei 16-12-24-19 = 71

Mater Dei was led by balanced scoring from KM Lewis-22; Adams -21and Duarte - 19.

Whitney Young has talented players in #3 Kiana Johnson, a junior guard, #15 Linae Harper, a freshman guard and #11 Janee Thompson a senior guard.
What Whitney Young doesnt have is height(only one girl over 6' and I dont think she played) and they do not have any outside shooting.

The team that impressed me the most out of the 5 games I watched was La Jolla Country Day. They spanked Villa Park 77-42. They only dressed 8 players but mainly use 6 players. They all have ball handling and shooting talent.
Watch out what could be a great game in the state playoffs for the southern half if LJCD plays Harvard Westlake in Division 4.

Thanks, IM.

I've been curious about LJCD. Did the Villa Park players still chant their own name at the end of the game?

And will you be in the LB Poly house tomorrow night?

Villa Park always chants their names, win or lose. I guess it is some sort of tradition.

LJCD only dresses 8 players and all are athletes and players. They had a 6'4" girl named Gillian Howard who played both Basketball and Volleyball. I asked one of the people from LJ where she was and I was told she gave up b-ball to stick to VB.

Cant make it to LB Poly - WY game. I will be at a different game in OC

LJCD team much improved from start of season, that coach knows how to get them ready for play offs, OC is right - that will be one of the best match ups in the play offs. VP not VP last night, they can't score with their starters on the bench duh!!
