#5 Stanford put the pedal to the metal in the last few minutes to pull out a win over #7 Cal, 62-53. It was the first "Battle of the Bay" meeting between the two teams this season. The second will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Maples Pavilion. It will be broadcast on ESPN2.
#1 class of 2013 prospect Mercedes Russell and her Springfield Millers also used the last few minutes to grind out a 57-53 victory over Willamette. It was a rematch of last year's state championship, which Springfield also won. Russell was limited to eight points and six rebounds in the first half, but was able to overcome double- and triple-teams.
