Earlier this week, the WBCA announced the 84 nominees for its 2014 Good Works Team - NCAA basketball players who have made notable contributions through community service. This is the second year of the program.
Tennessee legend and Indiana Fever star forward Tamika Catchings is part of the panel that will choose the team. She said she is excited about this year.
"This is a way to recognize the great things that young players are doing in the community," Catchings said.
The list will be pared to 10 in February, and will consist of five Division I players and five from Divisions II, III and the NAIA. Catchings said the focus is on the quality of community service that each team member provides.
"Team members are not necessarily the best players on the team," she said. "The things they do off-court will leave a legacy. It's about their assist in the community."
Catchings' father Harvey played in the NBA when she was growing up, and he was involved in community service then. When Catchings went to Tennessee, coach Pat Summitt often had players participate in service projects.
"Community service makes you a well-rounded person," Catchings said.
Catchings runs the Catch the Stars Foundation in Indianapolis, which serves youth.
