Class of 2013 top recruit Mercedes Russell is the Gatorade National Player of the Year. She was presented the award by none other than Maya Moore:
The Tennessee-bound Russell received the award during a surprise ceremony at the school Wednesday morning. She is the second Oregon player to win Gatorade’s basketball award, following Kevin Love in 2006-07......
“It means a lot,” Russell said. “I was just talking with someone who was telling me about all the players who are in this category, and it’s just shocking. I was surprised that I won.”
Springfield coach Bill Wagner said the award is a “big deal.”
“It shows what a special player and a special person that she is,” Wagner said. “The award obviously is based on her talent, but it speaks about character. She’s definitely earned it, just the time and effort she’s put in to reach this point.”
Russell will attend Tennessee.
Congrats, youngin.
