Notre Dame, Cal join "black lives matter" movement

Notre Dame players wore "I can't breathe" T-shirts in pregame warm ups today, in support of the family of Eric Garner, who died in New York in July after being placed in a police chokehold:

The players wore the shirts while warming up before their 70-50 win over Michigan. Starters took them off for the pregame introductions while the reserves kept them on.

Reimer said the players decided to wear the shirts because "it's an issue we're all passionate about."

Coach Muffet McGraw supports player's actions.

Cal wore warm up jerseys covered in duct tape that bore the names of shooting victims, and the statement "black lives matter" during their game today. Coach Lindsay Gottlieb is supportive:

As student-athletes at Cal, our young women have a voice and a platform, and they chose to use it today. They want to be part of a solution, and they took the steps that were in their power today.

We can talk about X’s and O’s all day, but in reality there are bigger life issues and the moral consciousness of our players is something I’m proud of. I don’t tell them what to think, but I do encourage them to think.
