Tonight's WNBA action:
The Silver Stars captured their sixth consecutive win by downing the Mystics, 78-73.
The Sun beat the Shock, 86-75.
The Liberty overcame the Sky, 64-59.
Other league news:
The soon-to-be-retired Tully Bevilaqua was honored by Fever fans prior to last night's game.
Indiana is frustrated, MVP Tamika Catchings says.
Following their loss last night, the Lynx plan to refocus before the Olympic break.
The Sun are hosting a meet and greet with Rebecca Lobo prior to the Sept. 7 game.
The Dream's skills academy is Monday, July 16.
Fireworks could be poppin soon for the Shock.
NCAA:
Notre Dame's Natalie Achonwa will be on the world stage soon, as a member of Canada's Olympic team.
Nebraska is already trying to get a jump on next season.
Club ball:
It's day two of the Big State Flava Jam in Texas, and day one of the End of the Trail Tournament in Oregon, and neither organization has a scoreboard. I've never understood why the media doesn't cover club ball tournaments. Maybe they still don't understand that club ball is the way kids get scholarships these days.

Sparks down dispassionate Lynx, 96-90
Things aren't always what they seem: despite such a strong start to their season, the Lynx felt like there was something missing all along. It's caught up with them the last two games, which they've lost, said all-star guard Seimone Augustus. Today it was Sparks 96, Lynx 90.
Game notes:
- Jacki Gemelos, who the Lynx drafted with the idea of bringing her in next year, was at today's game. She did a halftime interview with Lynx radio, and met the Lynx coaches for the first time after the game. She was all smiles.
- Camp day! Love the enthusiasm and spirit of all the young campers in attendance at today's game. Camp day is always one of my favorites.
- Andrea Riley was signed yesterday and warmed up with the team, but didn't play. Ebony Hoffman, who has been out three weeks with a sprained ankle, dressed for the first time tonight, but didn't play. Nicky Anosike came in at halftime to join the others on the bench.
- Seimone Augustus is so fluid. She makes those three-shots look like nothing at all. Just silky and effortless.
- Candace Parker is serious about going for that MVP award.
In today's other game, the hot Silver Stars defeated Indiana, 88-72. The Fever are frustrated.

"I just want to play ball"
I'm not a Nike person, but they make some incredible videos.
"I just want to play ball" was shown today at a timeout in the Sparks-Lynx game, and it put a lump in my throat.
I'm sure you can resonate with some of the phrases uttered within. Or maybe you're like me and they all hit home.
PS - Thank god for Title IX.

It's the Fourth of July
Upside:
Former Storm guard Adia Barnes has tied the knot.
Thoughtful side:
Trying times in Tulsa, as seen through the eyes of Temeka Johnson and Courtney Paris.
Only one more week and the WNBA is off for a month for the Olympic games. *sigh*
Tomorrow's WNBA games:
Lynx visit Sparks
Silver Stars are at the Fever

There's always more.......
1. Despite Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner's 38 (freakin) points, the Silver Stars beat Phoenix tonight, 82-81.
2. Ya gotta love a stats geek - in this case, Kevin Pelton of the Seattle Storm, who has offensive/defensive ratings and schedule ratings:

'Tis the season for recruiting
High school recruiting:
July is the hottest recruiting month of the year. Are you ready??????
The biggest tournament West of the Mississippi, End of the Trail, begins Friday.
Bria and Briana Day have rescinded their verbal commitments to North Carolina and have reopened their recruitment. Maybe they were worried about playing time?
Another pair of twins have decided to go separate ways: Danielle Williams to Michigan and Dominique Williams to UCLA.
Another fab five?
WNBA:
The Silver Stars have risen to second in this week's power rankings.
Silver Stars guard Tully Bevilaqua will retire at the end of this season, at the age of 40.
NCAA:
Checking in with Baylor center Brittney Griner, on a variety of topics.
Vanderbilt Coach Melanie Balcomb's contract has been extended through 2017.
Tricia Binford will be with Montana State for at least three more seasons.
Four Nations Tournament:
The women's USA team had a great time last week in China.

Newsy Monday
WNBA Western and Eastern Conference players of the week are, respectively, Sophia Young and Angel McCoughtry.
Players of the month are Candace Parker for the West and Tina Charles for the East.
June rookie of the month is Samantha Prahalis.
Amazing Candace Parker video.
College news:
Talk about program security for recruits....Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw has signed a ten-year contract extension - maybe the longest such extension ever.
Charmin Smith is now associate head coach at Cal.

Kelly and Coco Miller waived, and other transactions
Rough day for Kelly and Coco Miller, as both got waived - Kelly, by the New York Liberty and Coco, by the Los Angeles Sparks.
I thought the Sparks should have brought back rookie Khadijah Rushdan in the first place.
What are the odds of that happening?
In other transactions:
The Tulsa Shock and Indiana Fever just swapped Karima Christmas and Roneeka Hodges.
Last night the Mercury waived guard Andrea Riley.
All transactions.
