Last year's championship seems to have opened the door to all teams, one newspaper says.
Other college:
Missouri will join the SEC.
Green Bay is not an "under-the-radar team" anymore.
WNBA:
Swin Cash is pissed, and she's speaking up. (Go girl!)
Kristen Mann's overseas journal, part I.
Youngins playing hoops:
Basketball is big in Alaska, though residents have to go through a lot to play.

Kara Lawson raises $17,000 for Alzheimer's research and to honor Pat Summitt
Three miles and some yards, $17,000:
"She's doing great," Lawson told The Associated Press. "She's excited about the season and this team. Getting back into the routine of the season is really good for her. She's an inspiration. She continues to do her job while living with the disease."

Pat Summitt on 20/20
The full broadcast from last night is here - just skip to the 27:10 mark.
A lot of great gems in there.
Sure, she could wake up one day and just want to hang out at the beach. But I have a feeling she'll be coaching until some drastic circumstance prevents her from doing so. It's who she is.
Footnote: Kara Lawson completed her 5k run for Alzheimer's research a few hours ago. Still waiting for the write-up to be posted.......

Young Cal Bears make big impression in debut
The freshmen showed out in Cal's first exhibition game last night - especially Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray, who had 18 and 13 points, respectively. Coach Lindsay Gottlieb thinks it's a sign of the future:
“Somehow, I think that Boyd and Gray were switched at birth and somehow are really long-lost sisters,” said Gottlieb. “They have a feel for each other and I think that we’ll hear ‘Boyd to Gray for two’ many many times over their careers."
Other bangin' news:
Kara Lawson and husband Damien Barling are running this weekend to raise money for Alzheimer's research, in honor of Pat Summitt. They've raised $15,000 in just one month alone.
Nice feature on Stanford forwards/sisters Nnemkadi and Chiney Ogwumike.
Seattle Storm players overseas update.

On the way to National Signing Day, committments flow
Confirming what I heard last weekend, #6 Jordan Adams of Mater Dei has committed to USC.
#10 Imani Stafford has narrowed her choices to USC and Texas.
The Pac-12 is raking them in so far.
Maryland is riding high in the East.
Baylor and Tennessee are cleaning up in the middle of the country.
So far, these are the class rankings.

Some inspiration, some news, and a few updates
Extremely inspirational:
Big ups to New York City prep basketballer (and other sports) Jacquie Kennedy, who excels despite a learning disability.
Euro update:
So much news in this update.......Lindsay Whalen needed an ankle operation recently. (What?) So Ticha Penicheiro is filling in for her with USK Prague until she can return. In the meantime, Australian superstar Lauren Jackson is playing in Spain.
Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner won a Euroleague MVP award last week.
Recruiting news:
This is a few days old, but I forgot to post it.....Kentucky has landed #12 Janee Thompson of Chicago. In the piece I read the other day but can't find right now, Thompson said Kentucky has recruited her longer than any other school.
DeWanna Bonner's sister Erica McCall, as well as Khadijah Sessions, are making the visitation rounds.
More on the divorce:
The Big 12 loves West Virginia so much. They say that acceptance into the league isn't contingent on the university getting an early release from the Big East.
Pat Summitt:
Coach Pat Summitt will be on "20/20" tomorrow night with Robin Roberts.
She received a letter of support from former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
College injury update:
Purdue's Drey Mingo remains positive despite her recent setback.
Chelsey Lee of Rutgers struggled with her decision to have season-ending surgery.

Mo' drama
The NCAA's plan to increase the scholarships of college athletes by $2,000 has raised concerns over whether or not schools will be able to afford it. Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush compared the NCAA to the mafia.
Wow.
Rankings:
ESPN ranks mid-majors for the first time.
USA Today/ESPN Division II top 25 poll.
USA Today/ESPN Division III top 25 poll.
Random college news:
Rutgers Coach C. Vivian Stringer is now coaching Betnijah Laney, whose mother, Yolanda, she coached many years ago.
UNCW, under Coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, is still figuring out their rotation with five new players.
Pat Summitt:
Amazing, rarely-seen photos of the legendary coach from toddler years to the present.
Cool WNBA bonus:
Mapping the stars overseas.

More of "As the Basketball World Turns"
Oh, the drama:
West Virginia really wants to accept that wedding invitation from the Big 12, but it needs a quick divorce from the Big East. Hence, WVU's lawsuit.
Downer news:
Notre Dame sophomore post Natalie Achonwa will miss a month due to a bad knee.
Louisville sophomore guard Charmaine Tay is academically ineligible for fall semester.
Maryland star center Lynetta Kizer has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.
Tennessee Vols:
The Vols whooped Carson-Newman 105-40 in their first exhibition tonight, at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Tennessee has a tough schedule this year, as usual.
The Vols are minimizing mystery this year.
Pre-season all-America team:
Brittney Griner headlines. The other four members are: Skylar Diggins, Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Shenise Johnson and Shekinna Stricklin.
Upper news:
Katie Collier, the Seattle star who is battling leukemia, has committed to the University of Washington. New coach Kevin McGuff is building a program.
