UCLA 57, Cal 46

Nice win tonight by the Bruins. The scoring was much more balanced on the UCLA side, which is good to see. The rebounds need some work, though.

The stands at Pauley Pavilion were nicely filled with those there to see the return of so many LA-area players now on the Cal Bears team. I saw the Cajon team (for Layshia Clarendon), a couple Chatsworth players (Gennifer Brandon), Ariyah Crook-Williams of Long Beach Poly (maybe for Jasmine Dixon), and team members from Marlborough and Bishop Amat.

The first half belonged to Miss California Basketball 2009 (Clarendon), and the second half was owned by Miss California Basketball 2008 (Dixon). They ended with 11 and 13 points, respectively.

This game was just fun to watch. Cal is young and has so much energy. UCLA is getting a groove in Coach Nikki Caldwell's second year. Both teams played ridiculous defense. This will be a good match-up for years to come, I predict.

Layshia Clarendon brings the ball up court for the Bears in the first half.

A little later, Clarendon successfully puts up a shot.

Jasmine Dixon looks to pass the ball after getting it on the scramble.

In the second half, Dixon looks to get it by Gennifer Brandon.

Mariah Williams sets it up in the second half.

Freshman sensation Markel Walker got clocked in the nose during practice this week and was wearing the face mask tonight, which hampered her rebounding. Dixon's shoulder was taped up for another game.

Tierra Rogers (center) and Rama N'diaye (behind her) traveled with the team and wore sweats. I thought that was pretty cool.

It's obvious that UCLA needs points and posts. I love that Ariya was there because Caldwell needs her. She always said that Tennessee was her dream school, but she doesn't appear to be on their radar and UConn will probably get Massengale to go with Hartley.
