First-day NCAA scores: historical context surprises

There aren't any upsets from today's results - no higher seeds beating lower seeds (though TCU and Tulane came close, predictably). But when you consider the historical context of women's basketball, it's a "wow" day.

Rutgers out in the first round at the hands of Iowa, no less?

Gonzaga beating North Carolina?

Louisiana Tech back in the tourney to get kicked out again?

Georgetown being in the tourney again for the first time in 17 years and winning?

Tennessee and LSU back in form?

St. John's winning?

WOW!

Does this hurt women's basketball? Just kidding.

Two great Vols stories, both with the same humorous picture of the women towering over Austin Peay: they're tall, and they didn't mess up in the first round this time.

GO, ZAGS!!!! what a fun and exciting game to be at. i had the zags winning, but i didn't think it'd be quite so down to the wire. :)

portland state did themselves proud in their first ncaa appearance. they hung with a&m up til halftime. after that, size and talent won out.

both teams had lots of fans come and it made for a lot of energy in the building.

can't wait til monday for the zags and a&m game. go, zags. i think the zags have a real shot at an upset. after all, they came back from 16 down to lose by only 4 to a&m in a pre-season tourney.

had a nice visit with ex-wnba'er and ex-a&m pg a'quaneshia (sp?)franklin between games. she's the color commentator for a&m. very sweet and personable.

Is that a man in the first moments of ESPN's tournament opener? (No DVR, no Tivo, 64-year-old eyes.) If it is, why feature a guy?
