Last night I messed around and got a double.....of games. First I went to USC's opener against Hawaii, to accompany womenshoopsworld.com reporter Brian Love and scope the match up myself.
I continue to be impressed with Trojan junior forward Kristen Simon, who had a double-double (as she did in last week's exhibition game), and freshmen Ja'Tavia Tapley and Minyon Moore, who can both score. I think they will be able to contribute significantly this year.
Then I rolled over to catch UCLA's season tipoff with Pacific. The Bruins got off to a slow start, but when they caught fire, it was something to behold. They have a great new addition in transfer Nicole Kornet, and returners Jordin Canada, Monique Billings, Kennedy Burke, Ashley Hearn and Kelli Hayes have made notable improvements. Hearn's three consecutive deflections were so much fun, and got the crowd yelling.
UCLA has good on-court communication, and they seem to have great chemistry already. Coach Cori Close said post-game that the team hasn't begun to reach their full potential, and that's scary.
Often, the stories on womenshoopsworld.com on these games are the only ones you'll see. So here we are:
No. 9 UCLA overcomes slow start to down Pacific, 82-55.
Trojans demonstrate a united team effort in 32-point rout.
