The death of Northwestern guard Joran Hankins, found yesterday, has been ruled a suicide.
The university is offering condolences, support and resources to students.
This tragedy underlies the importance of USC's Kristen Simon being willing to discuss her struggles with depression, which included thoughts of suicide.
Five years ago I broke the story of Chamique Holdsclaw going public with her depression battle and suicide attempt, in a book. She has been an active mental health advocate ever since.
We need more like Kristen and Chamique, who are willing to speak up. We also need more who pay attention and are willing to try to help those who they suspect might have mental health issues.
Much work to be done.
Many prayers and much love to Jordan Hankins' family, and to the Northwestern community. I can't imagine the pain.
