South Coast tourney quarterfinals are set

Here's the low down from my man IM in OC:

Some good matches are in place for Tuesday and Wednesday in OC at the South Coast Holiday Classic.

San Clemente will play Foothill High School in a rematch of last years Championship game, which Foothill won 46-32. San Clemente won its first-round match Monday night over Elsinore High School, 77-36. SC was led by USC signee Cassie Harberts, with 25 points. Junior Lauren Pluimer(younger sister of former UCLA star Lindsay Pluimer) had 15 points, and freshman Brogan Griffin added 14 points in her first high school game.

Sophomore Molly Gruebel added nine points for Foothill. Irvine High School beat Torrance High School, 50-44. Irvine was led by Kristen Liddle, who had 24 points.

The quarter finals will be played both Tuesday and Wednesday at University High School and Woodbridge High School

Besides the FH v SC game, on Tuesday, the other matchups are Villa Park High School vs Laguna Hills High School. Villa Park is led by Brianna Salvatorre, a UC Davis commit and Nicole Ballesteros, who will be playing for USD next year. Laguna Hills is led by Lauren Engeln - a UConn signee - and Celia Marfone, an improving sophomore. Irvine High School will face Woodbridge High School. Santa Margarita HS upset Edison HS in OT, 56-50, and advances to the semifinals on Friday night.
SMHS was led by Melissa Zornigs 23 points. Edisons Bonnie Samuelson had 17 points.
Very exciting game. SMHS had a 10 point lead at half 29-19. Edison cut into the lead to trail by two going into the final quarter. Edison had one brief lead in the 4th quarter, and then the rest of the quarter was trading baskets. During the 4th quarter SM's big, Elyse Lorenz fouled out. However, Edison couldnt take advantage and didnt have any legs left in the OT.

Semis are Friday night at University HS:
Villa Park v Woodbridge @ 6pm
Santa Margarita v San Clemente @7:30pm

All of Saturdays games are at Concordia University. 3rd place game at 6pm and Championship game at 7:30pm

Yep we stayed for the game after MV v University. Edison looked tired as I guess they played the night before and don't have a bench. Younger Samuelson was great 2nd half tying game with several seconds left going full length of court to get ball to #12 for a layup. But OC was right they had no legs left in OT. Not sure why they would be playing SM in 2nd game SM are good and better than most in OC. Most exciting game of tournament so far. Other Surprise is the turn around of Capo, who will cause some damage this year.

Semi Finals were both exciting games.
Woodbridge beat Villa Park 47-46.
The first half Woodbridge out hustled VP and played much smarter ball. VP made some poor shots and were playing catchup. 2nd half VP made a come back but couldnt get the three point shot to tie it and got a 2 point shot with one scond left.

Other Semi, Santa Margarita, led by Melissa Zornigs 43 points, a tournament record, beat San Clemente in OT 75-66
This game went back and forth with both teams never leading by more than 5 points. SM won it in OT.
Cassie Harberts has 24 points for SC.
Woodbridge v VP @7:30pm
SC v VP at 6pm
Laguna Hills v Edison @ 4:30pm
Conso final is
Capo Valley v University @3pm
All games are at Concordia University, with the first game for 15th/16th place at 9am.

South Coast Championship to Santa Margarita 51-44.
The game was close for nearly the first three quarters. The score tied at 35-35 with about two minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Then SM went on a 7-0 run to lead 42-35 going into the final quarter. In fact Woodbridge went ice cold only scoring one basket and two F/T's in a five and a half minute span over the last 2 minutes+ of the third quarter and until 4:45 left in the 4th. There was some trading of baskets after that but the closest Woodbridge got was down 49-44 with less than a minute left.
Melissa Zorning was named Tournament MVP, and deserved it for play at both ends of the court.
She finished with 16 points. Her games vs Edison and SC were the best two games I have seen her play over the past three plus years.

In the 3rd place game Villa Park beat San Clemente 57-43. Nicole Ballestero and Brianna Salvatorre each had 15 points for the winners. Cassie Harberts had 27 points for SC.
Cassie Harberts was the high scorer for the tournament with 114 points, the second most points in the 16th year of the tournament.

The new face that impressed me was Woodbridges #3 Samantha Doucette. She played JV ball last year and has looked great in all of the games I have seen her. She scored 22 points in the championship game.
