Taya Reimer update

Taya Reimer has rejoined Notre Dame and will not transfer. She will return to practice tomorrow.

Reimer is back, but is the Irish?

This reminds me of a situation right now at another school.

Kentucky's Janee Thompson's catastrophic injury; Mississippi State's first loss

What a wild, emotional day in women's basketball.

#1 South Carolina rallied to beat #10 Kentucky, 68-60. But the win was marred by Kentucky guard Janee Thompson's catastrophic injury: she broke her fibula and dislocated her ankle. Reactions of her teammates can be seen in this video.

Wildcat coach Matthew Mitchell was also ejected from the game after his second technical for complaining about the officiating.

It hurts to see that kind of injury. Prayers going up for Thompson.

Also in the SEC, Vanderbilt handed #14 Mississippi State their first loss, 78-62. The Commodores snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. The only undefeated Division I teams left now are South Carolina and Princeton.

Florida State upset #13 Duke, 74-58, with a strong finish.

Near-upsets:

#12 Maryland squeaked by #23 Minnesota, 77-73.

It took #15 Stanford an overtime, but they held off Washington State, 86-76.

#19 Nebraska got past Illinois, 58-53.

#20 Georgia came back to down Auburn, 57-52.

#9 Texas A&M defeated LSU, 55-48.

More results:

Washington edged Cal, 79-77.

Michigan got by Ohio State in overtime, 100-94.

#7 Tennessee ran past Arkansas, 60-51.

#6 Louisville topped Wake Forest, 79-68.

USC nipped Utah, 46-43.

Northwestern took down Michigan State, 77-70.

UCLA outgunned Colorado, 90-84.

#3 Texas goes down, leaving three unbeatens

Stunning comeback, stunning result:

Iowa State rallied from 18 down to beat #3 Texas, 59-57, handing them their first loss of the year.

Texas led by as much as 37-19 late in the first half. But Iowa State answered with a 38-13 run and the Longhorns went cold in the second half, hitting just 8 of 38 shots.

Brady Sanders had 16 points for Texas (13-1, 2-1), which held Iowa State to just Johnson's basket in the final 8:10 and still lost.

Texas let Iowa State erase its large lead in less than 10 minutes -- and Kidd Blaskowsky's 3 gave the Cyclones a 50-47 lead with 10:57 left.

Iowa State soon went cold though, and it had to rely on its defense to finish the win.

Texas scored just six points in a stretch spanning nearly 10 minutes in the second half until Brooke McCarty's 3 got the Longhorns within 57-56 Iowa State with 3:30 left.

McCarty, Sanders and Nneka Enemkpali all missed shots just before the buzzer.

Wow.

So that leaves just three undefeated Division I teams: South Carolina, Mississippi State and Princeton (the Tigers won today).

A user on the rebkell message boards named Durantula posed an interesting question earlier today: which teams will remain undefeated in conference play. Here is a list he/she compiled of such teams, thus far, in the power conferences:

Arizona St
Baylor
California
Duke
Kentucky
Louisville
Maryland
Miami
Minnesota
Mississippi St
Oklahoma
Oregon St
South Carolina
Stanford
Tennessee
Virginia

It makes you think.

Another upset:

TCU edged #16 Oklahoma State, 70-66.

Almost upset:

#5 Baylor survived West Virginia, 66-62.

More results:

It took a buzzer-beater to get Long Beach State past UC Davis, 63-60.

#18 Arizona State's 71-54 win over Arizona gives them the best start in program history, at 15-1.

Oklahoma used balanced offense to wreck Texas Tech, 75-58.

A record performance from Makenzi Morrison pulled BYU over Pepperdine, 84-78.

Full scoreboard.

Community comes together to help Long Beach Poly girls basketball

What a heart-warming story:

After Christmas, the Poly girls went to Florida for a tournament. After landing in South Florida, they stopped to grab a bite to eat before making the estimated 90-minute drive to Naples.

While they were inside the restaurant one of the team's rental vans was broken into. Equipment and personal items were stolen.
A Poly parent, who was making the trip a day later, was able to bring some extra uniforms so that the players who had theirs stolen would be able to play in the tournament.

Then, enter Long Beach.

The community came together, upon hearing the news, and within 48 hours $5,000 was raised in order to replace the items.
Nike also stepped in to replace some of the gear that was stolen.

Earlier this week, the Long Beach Police Department came through with a check for $1,000.
