Washington State finally wins one! And it's over Arizona State!

Big big win for the Cougars just seconds ago. The score was WSU 66, ASU 62. Check out the play by play....that would have been so much fun to be there!

April Cook, a 2008 graduate of Long Beach Poly, stepped up big today with 33 points.

Hoopfeed says this is the first time the Cougars have beat the Wildcats in 13 long years. Really? 1997? Wow.

It's all in how you look at it, + Kendall Hackney

To say this story - about a Washington state ball player who had her foot amputated so she could still play the game - is inspirational, is the biggest understatement that could be made. I'm floored by her attitude.

Miss Ohio Basketball 2009 is having much success and happiness at Northwestern University, where she's a shooting star.

A little West coast post

So I guess in their game last night, Stanford center Jayne Appel was called for a flagrant foul on UCLA's Jasmine Dixon, and ejected from the game. The Pac-10 reviewed the tape and decided not to suspend Appel, who was so upset at the thought that she was about to cry. Wow.

I'm wondering how the University of Oregon can get away with calling their page Full Court Press, when there's a website by that name. But they let junior Kristi Fallin blog about the Ducks' upcoming battle with Oregon State, and that makes me happy. Because coaches sure aren't giving the former junior college superstar many minutes.

And "Wynn-Wynn situation" nicely covers the coaching situation at Long Beach State.

Mater Dei 71, Whitney Young 58

I've been hoovering on the SoCal hoops board for the last 20 minutes, when the Mater Dei-Whitney Young matchup at the Nike Extravaganza would have been over. Three minutes ago someone posted that Mater Dei prevailed, 71-58. No surprises there, but too bad it wasn't a close game.

Story with video.

This was Young's first loss of the season. They're now 22-1.

Too bad neither the Young or Mater Dei coaches feel the need to post stats for their players on maxpreps. That's my biggest pet peeve with high school coaches. Not putting up your player's stats is unconscionable.

Tomorrow, Young travels to Long Beach Poly for a 6:30 showdown.

Sparks mascot to deliver Valentines

This is actually a cute idea: Sparky the dog will make Valentine deliveries next week. Those team owners are so smart.

Today's dramas

Doesn't the NCAA season feel like a drama? That's because it is.

Once-undefeated Wisconsin-Green Bay continues its epic slide, losing tonight to Detroit - now first in the Horizon League.

Boston College upset Duke and "let's rescind a college offer at the last minute" Coach Joanne P. McCallie. And the Senator's daughter helped. Ha.

Miami snapped its own losing streak by beating 15th-ranked North Carolina.

Jacki Gemelos finally suited up and played for USC tonight, after four years and five surgeries kept her on the bench. The Trojans lost to Cal, however, 61-55.

Around the rest of the Pac-10, Arizona State needed an overtime to beat Washington, 67-61.

Stanford put UCLA away, 74-53. (Big ups, by the way, to Bruin freshman Markel Walker for being named Pac-10 player of the week).

The Oregon schools didn't play, as they're gearing up for a Saturday Civil War showdown that will be the last at MacArthur Court in Eugene. The longtime facility is scheduled for a major rebuild after this season.

Wisconsin beat Minnesota 76-74 tonight, after two overtimes.

Ohio State had to rally to get by Iowa.

#14 Georgia needed overtime to beat #21 LSU.

Tennessee's win over Arkansas gave Vol Coach Pat Summitt her 20th victory of the season - the 34th consecutive year her team has had at least that many wins. Just incredible.

Extra: The doctor comes back to the Louisville Cardinals team.

One writer forecasts the future for Rutgers, and it isn't bad.

After last night's win over Kansas State that included another thrown down dunk, Baylor's Brittney Griner now holds the Big 12 single-season block record, with 122. The previous record was 119, by Oklahoma's Courtney Paris in the 2005-2006 season.

Nebraska: it keeps going

Since I'm too bummed about tonight's high school basketball results, I'm going to focus on Nebraska's thrashing of Oklahoma State. A whoppin' 10,227 fans were on hand to see the Huskers beat the #10 team. Nebraska is now 20-0.

"I'm not even sure we'll watch the tape, to be honest with you," Oklahoma State Coach Kurt Budke said.

Ouch.

But I love Cinderella stories.

Ticha Penicheiro to the Sparks

It's true.

WBCA High School All-America game will take center stage

No college or high school gym this year for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's showcase event for the nation's top high school ballers. This year they will play on the same court that will be used for the Final Four in San Antonio.

'Bout time.

Your favorite pro players overseas

UMMC Ekaterinburg beat Galatasaray Istanbul tonight, 79-55. Sportspagemagazine has some great pics of several of our favorite pro players, like Candace Parker jumping, Sophia Young and Deanna Nolan, Parker and Young, Cappie Pondexter, Nolan and her trademark jumper face. And while I'm happy to see Parker looking to be in such good shape, it concerns me that she's wearing the shoulder brace again.
