Statement games

Some teams making statements today:

#7 Oregon State gutted USC, 68-35.

#12 Stanford dominated Washington State, 75-56.

#19 Princeton cruised past Dartmouth, 83-65.

Cal routed Washington, 82-58.

More results:

Oklahoma State squeaked by Iowa State, 63-62.

Kansas State edged Texas Tech, 41-38.

Marist downed Iona, 63-58, for their third straight win.

BYU survived Santa Clara, 58-56.

Oregon sweeps UCLA:

Jillian Alleyne scored a last-second layup to propel Oregon over UCLA, 67-65. The Ducks sweep the season series with the Bruins, after beating them Jan. 5.

UCLA lead at halftime, 42-33. My former junior high school teacher, who I've known for over 35 years, was there and she was texting me (yes, she texts at 73) that it didn't look good. Then suddenly: "nail biter." By the time I asked what the score was, she was exclaiming via the typed word that they had pulled it off. She and other Duck fans are excited by new coach Kelly Graves.

I wonder if others are too, because ESPN doesn't usually write up a brief for unranked teams.

Full scoreboard.

Player news:

Kentucky's Makayla Epps is ready for stardom now, coach Matthew Mitchell says.

Jamie Roe has found peace on the court with Texas Tech.

For Missouri's Lindsey Cunningham, confidence is key.

WNBA free agents can sign contracts tomorrow

Remember that beginning tomorrow, WNBA free agents can sign contracts with teams, as per last year's Collective Bargaining Agreement.

I have learned that there has been much talking between players and teams - and teams and teams. In fact, a major three-team trade is supposedly in the works, which will involve some marquee players leaving their squads. Be ready for that.

There may be other big news to come, so expect the unexpected.

In the meantime, the Tulsa Shock are weighing their options.

Midseason awards

ESPNW has designated midseason awards:

Player of the year: Jewell Loyd, Notre Dame

Freshman of the year: A'Ja Wilson, South Carolina

Coach of the year: Charli Turner Thorne, Arizona State

Most improved player: Morgan Bailey, BYU

Comeback player: Morgan Tuck, UConn

Biggest surprise: Minnesota's success without Rachel Banham

Biggest disappointment: Michigan State

WNBA #1 draft pick: Isabelle Harrison, Tennessee

All-Americans: Nina Davis, Baylor; Jewell Loyd, Notre Dame; Tiffany Mitchell, South Carolina; Breanna Stewart, UConn; Amanda Zahui B., Minnesota.

The only selection I have issue with is head coach. Nothing against Charli Turner Thorne, but Mississippi State's Vic Schaefer, Princeton's Courtney Banghart or Seton Hall's Tony Bozzella have done more with less.

Eastern Michigan player killed in auto accident

Eastern Michigan junior forward Shannise Heady was killed in an automobile accident early this morning, along with another student:

"Obviously this is one of our toughest days as a program and for the entire Eagle Nation as we mourn the loss of Shannise," said EMU Head Women's Basketball Coach Tory Verdi. "No words can describe the feelings right now as we are truly devastated to learn of her passing. Shannise was not only an inspiration to all of us, but she brought energy and liveliness to our team. She was a true joy to coach and has left an everlasting impression not only on me but the rest of our team as well. She will be missed greatly."

Rachel Banham will return in 2015-2016 for Minnesota

Minnesota star Rachel Banham, who was lost for the season with a torn ACL last month, has won a hardship waiver from the NCAA and will return for next season:

“I am really excited to announce that I will be coming back to play next year for the University of Minnesota,” said Banham, who will graduate in the spring with a degree in sociology. “My family and my teammates have been a huge influence on this decision. I have a lot of unfinished business here at the Barn and I am excited to play in front of these great fans.”

More on fight night

More video of the Auburn-Alabama fight.

There was also a fight at the Washburn-Central Oklahoma game in Division II, that included an ejection.

Many upsets, and a fight

Upset night:

#17 Florida State stunned #4 Louisville, 68-63.

#22 Georgia upended #10 Texas A&M, 54-51.

Boston College upset #15 Duke, 60-56.

Purdue took down #21 Minnesota, 90-88. Stabresa McDaniel sustained a knee injury for the Gophers.

Fight night:

Alabama squeaked out a win over Auburn, 51-50. But not before three players were ejected in the first half for fighting:

Alabama's Breanna Hayden and Meoshonti Knight and Auburn's Hasina Muhammad all earned ejections during the first half of the Crimson Tide-Tigers game in Tuscaloosa tonight after a fight that featured a few punches and one tumbling referee.

Yikes!!

Almost-upsets:

#18 Mississippi State survived Ole Miss, 64-62.

#12 North Carolina edged North Carolina State, 67-63.

#20 Iowa staved off Michigan, 76-70.

#24 Western Kentucky outlasted UTEP, 80-74.

Other - very close - results:

Northwestern squeaked by Illinois, 68-67.

Vanderbilt came back to beat Arkansas, 55-53.

Penn State (actually) beat Indiana, 79-75.

McNeese State defeated Incarnate Word in two overtimes, 104-101.

"We Back Pat" night:

#5 Tennessee routed LSU, 75-58, on "We Back Pat Night" at Thompson-Boling Arena. Pat Summitt took a picture with current Tennessee coach Holly Warlick and former assistant and current Tiger head coach Nikki Caldwell. Her impact on women's basketball was on full display.

Full scoreboard.

NCAA investigating academic fraud at 20 colleges

Possible scandal on the horizon:

UNC, you’re not alone. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is investigating allegations of academic misconduct on 20 campuses, the association’s head of enforcement told The Chronicle on Tuesday.

The cases are at various stages, from preliminary inquiry to awaiting a hearing with the Division I Committee on Infractions, and they involve a variety of missteps, including allegations that players received impermissible assistance from professors, academic advisers, or people outside of an athletic department. Eighteen of the cases are in Division I, one is in Division II, and one is in Division III. The official declined to name any of the colleges.

Player news:

Washington State senior Shalie Dheensaw is out for the season with a right knee injury. Dheensaw was hurt during last Friday's game at Oregon State. She was the team's leading rebounder.

Tennessee's Diamond DeShields was a game-changer at the recent NCAA Convention.

Cassie Rochel has suited up once again for Wisconsin.

Team news:

Michigan isn't like most teams.

LSU remains faithful to coach Nikki Caldwell's game plan.

Enemkpali tears ACL; Pennsylvania player died from inhaled gum

Sadness in the news today:

Texas senior forward Nneka Enemkpali tore her left ACL in yesterday's game against Baylor. The injury not only ends her season, but her college career:

Enemkpali finishes her collegiate career ranked ninth in total rebounds (899) and 30th in total points (1,116) at Texas. The Pflugerville, Texas native leads the Big 12 in rebounding (10.4 rpg) and double-doubles (nine) this season

And what a huge blow to the Longhorns. How will they respond?

Shanice Clark - the Pennsylvania player found dead in her dorm room Sunday morning - likely inhaled gum during her sleep.

NCAA votes to increase the value of athletic scholarships

Huge news today for student-athletes:

FORT WASHINGTON, Md.— In landmark action for major-college sports, schools and athlete representatives from the NCAA's five wealthiest conferences on Saturday voted 79-1 to expand what Division I schools can provide under an athletic scholarship.

The vote, taken during the NCAA's annual convention, redefines an athletic scholarship so that it can cover not only the traditional tuition, room, board, books and fees, but also the incidental costs of attending college. That means a scholarship will now be able to pay for items including transportation and miscellaneous personal expenses.

Conservatively this means Division I men's and women's athletes collectively stand to gain at least $50 million a year in additional benefits.

So much to consume

Today's results:

West Virginia upset #21 Oklahoma State, 61-49.

#3 Baylor rallied to top Kansas, 71-63.

#4 Texas snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Texas Tech, 55-44.

Michigan came back to stuff Northwestern, 73-66.

Iowa State toppled Kansas State, 79-59.

Tulane slipped by SMU, 60-58.

Saint Mary's defeated BYU, 61-51, and swept a tough road swing.

Oklahoma routed TCU, 97-81.

Middle Tennessee State pounded Louisiana Tech, 82-59.

Full scoreboard.
